Copyright guidelines for iLecture

Creating teaching material with iLecture can have significant copyright implications. The use of Macquarie University's iLecture system requires you to have a clear understanding of the different types of intellectual property being used in your lectures. Use of the 'hold' or 'suspend' button when giving an iLecture will be essential in many of the following cases.

The spoken voice

Staff engaged to teach can expect to have their voice captured, used and potentially re-used to meet the operational needs of the University.
It is reasonable to assume that students understand that their voice will be captured in the same way during an iLecture.
It is implicit that a visiting lecturer, by agreeing to speak at a recorded lecture, is consenting to the normal use that the University will make of that lecture.

Broadcast material

Audio Visual and Broadcast material that has been copied may not be used in an iLecture.

Although our Screenrights licence allows staff and students to copy broadcasts from the source, it does not allow a further reproduction by iLecture. Use the hold button if you wish to play audio visual and broadcast material.

Print and other works

Print and other works that have been copied may not be used in an iLecture.
Although our CAL licence allows staff to reproduce book chapters and journal articles, compliance with the licence requires that these reproductions be held, in the first instance, in e-Reserve (our Part VB Repository) operated by the University Library. An iLecture visualiser may be used for displaying a lecturer's work.

Music

No published music may be captured in an iLecture.
Although the University holds a licence allowing staff to digitise music for students to access, the access is permitted by streaming only . As iLecture also allows downloading, it is not a compliant system for reliance on this licence.

Movies and TV shows

Hired, borrowed or purchased DVD or cassette of a movie or TV show may not be used in iLecture (in whole or in part).
The University holds no licence to reproduce movies or TV shows unless from a broadcast source.

The use of the 'suspend' button is recommended.
