Copyright for Staff
Guidelines for audio visual and broadcast material
University staff and students may, under the benefits of our Screenrights licence, copy and communicate audio and video material in amounts greater than permitted under the Copyright Act.
Commercially produced video or sound recordings
It is generally acceptable that a DVD, CD, tape, etc that has been purchased or hired by either a staff member or a current student may be replayed for teaching and assessment in a course for Macquarie students. It may not, however, be copied, importantly this means that if the lecture is recorded, the recording may not contain any of the DVD, CD or tape. See the iLecture page for more information.
Television and radio broadcasts
The University staff and students may record free-to-air broadcasts, cable, satellite or subscription TV broadcasts, providing the copy is appropriately labelled.
All broadcasts used for teaching by staff must be marked within 14 days. A label for use by University staff is available from the Library. It reads:
MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY - COPYRIGHT NOTICE
This copy is made in reliance on Part VA of the Copyright Act 1968.
Date of broadcast:
Date this copy made (if different):
Once a broadcast is labelled, the tape is the property of the University and may be not used at or by another teaching institution.
Broadcasts may not be loaned to other educational institutions, or borrowed from another institution. One institution can copy for another institution (if both agree), providing the copy relates to a recording which was broadcast after 1990.
Screenrights permits the making of multiple copies of off-air broadcasts. All copies must be labelled with the copyright notice, above. An electronic copy is required to display the Part VA notice .
For privately held copies recorded prior to 1990, permission of the copyright owner is required.
Staff may keep copies of off-air broadcasts not labelled, if the tapes are used only for private research and study.
Staff may use off-air broadcasts for teaching purposes in overseas locations if Macquarie University is offering a course there.
A staff member can make or arrange a compilation tape of broadcasts, provided that the appropriate notice listing broadcast and copying dates for each segment is displayed.
The University is obligated to participate in the sampling surveys conducted by Screenrights. During the sampling period (usually over 6 weeks every few years) staff in the selected survey areas must report all copying of off-air broadcasts.
